Summer is here, and so is Ginnie Chadwyck-Healey with her top 10 to-do’s for mamas who who want to inject life into their wardrobe and beauty regimes.
Minimal hassle, a little expenditure, and maximum success rate.
What more could you ask for?
WELL worth the money (£158) for anyone with pigmentation flare-ups pre or post birth.
Use a small amount and pat on the skin with the fingertips to really target the t-zone and upper lip (most common areas). (Remove sunscreen each night, try Bliss Triple Oxygen Energizing Foam, £24, blissworld.co.uk )
Any shade goes for the classic slip on shoe that just works with everything. Better for your feet than flip flops and a fresh follow-on from the Nike obsession we’ve all enjoyed. (If you hate sweaty feet in summer then Topshop’s frill-edged socks are short enough and subtle enough to wear as well. Stick to a shade as close to your shoe colour to avoid shortened-leg effect.) 3. So long maternity jeans!
Instead opt for a below the knee skirt. Prints and colour are key. If you want to distract from a post pregnancy midline then the bolder the better. A fuller skirt will also help but avoid trainers to steer clear of cheerleader look. Or if you really want a smarter update opt for lace. Pair with a simple monochrome t-shirt or smarten up with a crisp collared shirt and sinch in the waist with a belt.
Self Portrait, from £200 at Net a Porter (lace), or Erdem Safia crocheted lace midi skirt now £537, Net a Porter. Striped split Midi skirt, £36.00 Topshop. Hibiscus outline print maxi skirt, £20.00 Topshop.com
4. Black baseball cap
Hides bad hair days and offers quick-fix sun coverage. £10.00 Asos.com
5. The Espadrille
For anyone needing an evening shoe who can’t face full on heels again then seek out an array of Espadrille styles at Stella McCartney. Remember ribbons around ankles can chop off your legs (not literally) so opt for ankle laces that are as close to skin tone as possible.
My favourite for NIGHT: Stella McCartney. For DAY: Manebi Flouro Orange Espadrille, £45.00 Baarandbass.com
6. Shirt dress
Crisp white shirt or for more ‘laissez-faire’ style opt for khaki (which is the only shade of green this summer).
One piece, minimal fuss in the morning and with short or mid length sleeves, a style that is forgiving on the arms. Cotton Lawn 3/4 sleeve dress now £14.80 at uniqlo.com
A personal favourite. Just treat yourself to a really fab pair or if you can’t bear to return to your Osh Kosh days then a dungarees dress is a great halfway point.
FRAME denim (now £140), Net a Porter or Topshop
Any colour, every colour, these are the best in town.
9. A body brush or exfoliating mitts
Next time you head to Boots to top up the wet wipes/ cotton wool/ folic acid/ nappies/ Bonjela supply GRAB one or both of these. Tell yourself that whilst the shower heats up or the bath is running you will brush brush brush every day.
Fabulous for circulation and a great skin boost for legs which have been hibernating all year. Slather on Aesop’s Geranium Leaf Hydrating Body Treatment £23.00 (or Wholefood’s Coconut Oil!) afterwards.
10. A fabulous one piece for the pool
With the right cut and appropriate print new mothers will re-discover their inner poolside goddess.
Nautical stripes, bold coral hues, pineapple prints – there is something for everyone. Practical for chasing after babies and yet entirely sophisticated as well.
You MUST wax pre shopping trip and you must ‘try before you buy’, unless you just buy loads online and then return them. This is almost as hard as jeans shopping but oh so worth it.
