As a mother, there is little you can do to stop your child getting spots and blemishes. Much of what happens to our skin is down to genetics.
What you can do, however, is up to you to help show her some sensible skin hygiene as she faces the challenges of entering her teenage years.
She’s too young to benefit (or afford!) most of your favourite products, but you can still teach her a thing or two about her skin.
Here are some beauty hacks that you and your daughter should adopt together:
You are what you eat
It’s no secret that a healthy skin and body come from the nutrients in our food which is why it’s important to encourage your daughter to start eating healthy. Cut off sugary drinks and junk food in their diet and allow them to snack on delicious fruits and nuts instead. Start eating more lean meats and leafy vegetables to ensure you and your daughter stay healthy and fit.
Get a regime
As hormone levels and the body changes, children heading to teenage years can be prone to several skin problems which can lead to acne, blackheads, and other blemishes. Help your daughter establish a skin care regimen by first identifying their skin type and what problems they may have. As a rule of thumb, use a gentle facial wash, toner, and moisturizer twice a day for a healthier looking skin. For severe skin problems, make an appointment with a dermatologist!
Our bodies often undergo drastic changes during our pre-teen years. Some may start to experience a growth spurt while others may have an increase in appetite. For the latter, it is important to remind your preteen to start exercising to help keep their bodies strong and fit as they grow older.
Wear Sunscreen or Sunblock
Other than a regular skincare routine, mothers and daughters should use sunscreen or sunblock products before heading out. This is to protect the skin from harmful UV rays from the sun which can lead to sunburns, premature aging, and even skin cancer.
Keep It Simple!
Some pre-teens may develop an interest in wearing makeup as they grow older. If your daughter is thinking of trying on makeup, make sure they invest in lightweight makeup that doesn’t clog the pores. Avoid heavy makeup as it often contains harsh chemicals that can alter your pre-teen’s appearance drastically.
Keep Hair Tidy
For girls with long hair, we all know the struggle of having to keep our hair out of our face during class.
While others may find it trendy to hide their pimples with their long locks, our hair may actually contribute to our face oily appearance! To avoid inviting new blemishes, keep your hair neat by tying it with a cloth scrunchie or pulling it off the side with some bobby pins. The possibilities are endless when it comes to hair accessories.
Try New Things
Every person has their own personal sense of style and your daughter is no different! Allow them to discover their own personal style by letting them try different outfits and clothes during shopping. You can bond with your daughter as you shop around. You can even give each other makeovers during mother-daughter time.
Starting healthy habits at an early age will help ensure you are healthier you grow older! Make small but healthy lifestyle choices like getting a full night’s worth of sleep (at least 6-8 hours), drink 8 glasses of water a day, and remove your makeup before heading off to bed. It may not seem like much but each small habit really does make a difference!
Who says beauty is only skin deep? While physical health is important, our values and our mindset are equally important since it showcases who we are as a person. In this stage, it is important to open a channel of communication between you and your daughter as she continues on her journey of self-discovery. Since this period is very sensitive, it is important to allow your child to express their thoughts and expressions even if they differ from yours.
However, it is also important to learn when to step in and lay down the law when needed. After all, you’re still a parent!
